Kavaratti ....An Alluring Archipelago
Exerting a magnetic pull over scuba divers, snorkellers and nature lovers, the 4,200-sq-km of immaculate archipelago lagoons, warm waters and unspoilt coral reefs, make Kavaratti, the capital of Lakshadweep, one of the most attractive island destinations in the country. Lying 300 km off the coast of the state of Kerala, in the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, the smallest Union Territory of India, is stunning in its remoteness. Encompassing a string of about 36 palm-fringed coral islands, of which around 10 are inhabited, Lakshadweep is nestled amidst deep blue lagoons that are spectacular in their beauty.Boasting an equally splendid flora and fauna, the waters come alive with schools of fish that seem like vibrant dots of colour swimming in the sea. From exploring shipwrecks that look like a virtual underwater museum to exploring the colourful marine life and indulging in various water sports like kayaking, windsurfing, canoeing, scuba diving and swimming, tourists can have their fill of nature's bounty in Kavaratti. In the lagoons around it, one can spot fascinating starfish, anemones, sea cucumbers, corals amongst a multitude of fish. Not just nature's paradise but also a spiritually significant place, Kavaratti has the maximum number of mosques in Lakshadweep. Out of 52 mosques, Jamnath, Mohidden and Ujra are the most prominent ones. Kavaratti also offers great food choices to visitors and spicy tuna fish, sweet potatoes and chicken, made in Malabar style, are a must try.

Bangaram is a tiny teardrop-shaped island in Lakshadweep, lying very close to Agatti and Kavaratti. Its creamy sands dotted with luxuriant plantations of coconut trees, fringed by turquoise lagoons, invite visitors to relax in this natural retreat. The warm and deep waters of the Indian Ocean, along with myriad flora and fauna, draw scuba divers as well. Some of the coral formations you can sight here include the black coral formations, varieties of coral fish like angel, clown, butterfly, surgeon, groupers along with turtles and morena. Since the island is uninhabited, one can explore its unspoilt environs and enjoy this treasure trove of nature at leisure. At night, phosphorescent plankton washed ashore on the coral sands imparts a bluish glow to the beach and the sight is ethereal.

Kadmat: Also know as cardamom island, Kadmat is a coral island that belongs to the Amindivi sub-group of Lakshadweep islands. It is surrounded by spectacular and large lagoons on the eastern and the western sides, with long, sandy beaches, an invaluable wealth of coral habitats and reef banks making it one of the most attractive tourist stopovers in Lakshadweep. The island abounds in flora and fauna, which can be explored through sports like scuba diving, kayaking, snorkelling etc. One can also take a cruise along the island to see beautiful species of marine life as well as the pristine landscape. Kadmat island is just 5 km away from Amini island and is separated by a deep water channel that makes it a different geographical unit.
The Kalpeni island boasts a huge storm bank of coral debris that runs along its eastern and southeastern shorelines. It is believed that a violent storm in 1847 threw up huge coral boulders along these shores. A haven for adventure seekers, the island offers exciting wonders of swimming, snorkelling and reef-walking. Water sports on kayaks, sailboats and pedal boats can also be enjoyed here. The island has a pristine beauty and looks particularly enthralling when sunlight falls on the water, causing it to glitter like a million aquamarines. A major attraction of the island is the Tip Beach that has a shallow emerald lagoon lapping at its white sandy shores. A 37-m-high lighthouse adds to the charm of the island. Along with two small islets of Tilakkam and Pitti and the uninhabited island of Cheriyam, Kalpeni forms a single atoll.
The Island bears striking resemblance to the Maldives, and can be rightly called a 'blue lagoon. It has the largest lagoons among all the islands of Lakshadweep.

Minicoy island floats along the side of one of the biggest lagoons in Lakshadweep. Touching the southernmost part of the islands, Minicoy is spread over an area of 4.8 sq km, making it the second-largest of the group. The scenic beauty of the island is enthralling and its pristine blue waters, coconut tree-lined shores and mirror-like inland lakes, all culminate to form a paradisiacal setting. Minicoy is set apart from the northern islands for its culture, which is quite lively. A variety of folk dances are practiced here, including lava, thaara, dandi, fuli and bandiya. The island uses colourful and beautiful boats called jahadhoni for boat races and receiving dignitaries. It also has a very old lighthouse that was constructed in 1885. Visitors are allowed to climb up to the very top and get sweeping views of the surrounding areas.
Being the only island in Lakshadweep that has three large shipwrecks, about 8 m deep, Minicoy is also a popular diving site. These wrecks look like a virtual museum that lies underwater. Moreover, tourists can find interesting species of fish swimming about, including hump-back parrot fish, red snappers, napoleon wrasse, barracuda and bull rays.
Thinnakara : this glorious island lies close to the Bangaram island and its beautiful beaches and scenic views make it one of the most attractive tourist spots in Lakshadweep. Since this teardrop-shaped island has limited connectivity to the mainland and no human habitation, it has managed to retain its natural environs. Exploring the unspoilt beauty of its creamy white sands, pristine beaches, vibrant corals and the endless blue sea, can be a great experience. The island sees scarce footfalls, and one can almost get the feel of a privately-owned island and relax on the beaches amidst swaying palm trees. You can also sunbathe on the lovely shores or enjoy a game of beach volleyball.
For lovers of water sports, the island is a haven as its crystal clear waters and marine life make it an ideal place for snorkelling, kayaking and scuba-diving. At night, one can sprawl on the beach and watch a billion stars light up the dark sky.
