Updated: May 8

Kerala, often called "God's Own Country," is not just about serene backwaters and lush tea plantations—it's also a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. From dense forests to rolling grasslands, Kerala's diverse ecosystems are home to an incredible variety of flora and fauna. Let’s embark on a journey through some of Kerala’s most spectacular wildlife sanctuaries and national parks.

1. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in Thekkady, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Kerala’s most famous protected areas. Spread across 925 sq km, it is known for its Asiatic elephants, tigers, and the picturesque Periyar Lake. A boat safari on the lake offers a unique chance to spot wildlife, including herds of elephants, gaur (Indian bison), and even elusive tigers.

2.Gavi  Periyar Tiger Reserve

A hidden gem nestled in the Pathanamthitta district, Gavi is part of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. This eco-tourism hotspot is rich in rare birds, Nilgiri tahrs, and lion-tailed macaques. The lush greenery and tranquil surroundings make it a perfect retreat for nature lovers.

3. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary)

Part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for elephants, leopards, and sloth bears. Jeep safaris here offer thrilling encounters with wildlife, while the Kuruva Island nearby adds to the region’s natural charm.

4. Eravikulam National Park

Famous for the endangered Nilgiri tahr, Eravikulam National Park near Munnar is a breathtaking landscape of rolling hills and shola forests. The park is also home to neelakurinji flowers, which bloom once every 12 years, covering the hills in a stunning blue hue.

5. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

A unique rain shadow forest, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its diverse wildlife, including grizzled giant squirrels, star tortoises, and over 225 bird species. The Thoovanam Waterfalls inside the sanctuary add to its scenic beauty.

6. Silent Valley National Park

One of India’s last pristine tropical evergreen forests, Silent Valley is a biodiversity hotspot. It shelters lion-tailed macaques, Malabar giant squirrels, and countless endemic species. The untouched wilderness makes it a must-visit for serious wildlife enthusiasts.

7. Parambikulam Tiger Reserve

A UNESCO World Heritage Site under the Western Ghats, Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is a pristine forest with tigers, leopards, and the world’s tallest teak tree (Kannimara Teak). The tribal-guided treks here offer an immersive jungle experience.

8. Mathikettan Shola National Park

A lesser-known but ecologically vital park, Mathikettan Shola is a dense shola forest that acts as a crucial wildlife corridor between other sanctuaries. It’s home to elephants, leopards, and rare birds.

9. Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Close to Thiruvananthapuram, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for its lion safari park, crocodile rehabilitation center, and rich birdlife. The Agasthyakoodam peak, a trekker’s paradise, lies within its boundaries.

10. Tholpetty Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

The northern part of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Tholpetty is known for its elephant herds, deer, and occasional tiger sightings. The guided jeep safaris here are a great way to explore the wilderness.

11. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Located on the banks of Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers. Migratory birds like Siberian storks, herons, and kingfishers flock here, especially during winter.
